A Conversation With  D. Markie Spring

Consistent with the purpose for which 2011 and the year starting August 12, 2010 were declared, International Year for people of African Descent (A/RES/64/169) and International Year of the Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding (A/RES/64/134), respectively, the view of a young professional, D. Markie Spring, is the focus.   Mr. Spring’s view creates the global setting within which the political situation is discussed.   The Vincentian situation is set against the happenings in African states where there is a wave of protests to topple leaders who have been ruling for decades.   Moreover, Mr. Spring has been making interesting comparisons between the situations in the global sphere with that in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and by extension the Caribbean.

Mr. Spring, who is Vincentian by birth, lives in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  He holds and MBA from the University of Leceister and a BA from Saint Mary’s University, Canada and is the author of a number of published works.

In a recent article headlined Saint Vincent and the Grenadines political arena: The emerging Iraq of the West, Mr. Spring compares SVG with Iraq and goes as far as predicting  a “….. bloody coup.”  He explains the basis of his prediction.  He also explains another interesting comparison that he makes in another article headlined  Shooting in Tucson: A global threat to liberal democracy.   In that article, Mr. Spring he opines that SVG is in a “similar threatening environment” and recommends some safeguards.   Moreover, he urges the New Democratic Party to support the ruling Unity Labour Party in good governance and spends some time on looking at what he considers to be the highlights of the recent national budget as presented by the ruling Unity Labour Party.
